Researching Yoga benefits and physiological changes and benefits for my university presentation

For my Coordinated Physiological Functions module I have to do a 5 minute presentation about any area of exercise physiology. (It’s tomorrow eeeek)

I have chosen to focus on Yoga. Since coming back to uni this September I have been going to classes a few times a week and doing some in the living room with my house mate too. (She is fab and practices every day). I started going as my aims this year were to keep stress as low as I can and do more exercise! My body likes to physically react to stress with many annoying symptoms so taking control is what I am trying to do. Plus, I have been really enjoying the classes and think I am already a bit stronger and more flexible. (I can now do crow pose and am working on headstand!)

Any way, the point of this blog post is to summarise some of my findings from my Yoga research. I have found a lot more studies looking at Yoga than I thought there would be.

Yoga is a mind-body interveion which combines physical exercise and meditation. This varies to different extent in varying practices and styles of yoga.(1) It is an unconventional form of exercise which involves a range of simple and complex body postures, asanas, which are maintained for set periods of time and involve associated controlled breathing and concentration of thoughts. (2) The breathing technique involves the use of abdominal muscles and the diaphragm. This is to maintain slow deep inspiration breaths which are momentarily held before slow and spontaneous exhalation. (2)

Yoga has been shown to have considerable health benefits including improved cognition, respiration, reduced cardiovascular risk, body mass index, blood pressure and diabetes. (3) It has also been shown to influence immunity and ameliorated joint disorders. (3) Other benefits include: Increased muscular strength, flexibility, range of motion, energy, relaxation, and sense of well-being, decreased pain, improved sleep quality, stress reduction, and control over physiological parameters. (1) Many studies looking at the effects of yoga and exercise show yoga to be effective in improving a variety of health-related outcome measures in both health and diseased populations. (4)

When a person practises yoga, with yogic attitude, there are several changes in physiology. (3) There is evidence that supports the hypotheses that yoga benefits physical and mental health via down regulation of the hypothalamic-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). (4)

Studies have suggested that there is: Rejuvination/regeneration of cells of the pancreas due to abdominal stretching; the possibility of plasticity bringing about changes in the hypo-pituitary-pancreatic axis; enhanced insulin receptor expression on muscles causing increased glucose uptake muscles and this reducing blood sugar; and improvement in lipid levels which could be due to increased hepatic lipase and lipoprotein. (3)

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) is one part of yogic practises. It is a sequence of certain postures/asanas performed with associated breathing. (5) It is believed to be an all round exercise. The 12 postures make up one round of practise and include alternate backward and forward bending postures.(6) Practise of Surya Namaskar involves inhalation to total lung capacity and exhaustion to residual volume. (6) During Surya Namaskar muscles of the entire body stretch and pressure alternately. Practise is claimed to improve general health and fitness. This is through benefits to both the postures and breathing. (7)

One study testing efficacy of regular practise of Surya Namaskar in improving cardio respiratory fitness observed that 6 months practise decreased resting pulse rate and blood pressure in both males and females. They measured this using bicycle ergometry and ling function tests.From the study it was concluded that Surya Namaskar practise can be advocated to improve cardio respiratory fitness for patients and health individuals. (5)

A different study observed the energy cost and cardiorespiratory changes during the practise of Surya Namaskar. After 3 months training a yogic practise schedule was performed in the lab and their pulmonary ventilation, carbon dioxide output, oxygen consumption, heart rate and other cardiorespiratory parameters were measure during the actual practise of Surya Namaskar. As an aerobic exercise Surya Namaskar seemed to be ideal as it involves both static stretching and slow dynamic component of exercise with optimal stress on the cardiorespiratory system.(7)

Another study measured cardiorespiratory responses and time it took to perform two successive rounds of practise at slow and fast pace. Oxygen demand of Surya Namaskar was increased by about 10% from the first to second round of practise. Heart rate reserve was increased by 2% from the first to the second round in slow practise and by 7% in fast practise. The net energy cost of fast practise of Surya Namaskar is comparible to the energy cost of rugby, hand ball and wrestling. It is lower than in judo and boxing. Results obtained suggest that Surya Namaskar is a mild form of aerobic exercise requiring on average 60-150 seconds to complete one round of practise. (6)

My lecturer was unsure about yoga as a topic for exercise physiology but I hope this assures him of the benefits!

Volunteering at Holiday Lunch Club

On Tuesday I volunteered at a holiday lunch club. These are aimed at mums with school aged children to help tackle holiday hunger and are organised by the local Nottingham Citycare and the National Charities Partnership (Tesco, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation).

The parents come and take part in some physical activity, then cook a healthy meal, have a brief nutrition session and then eat with their children.

The children all went outside to play and do chalk drawings with the play workers and we started off by doing a zumba sessions! All the mums and the session leaders joined in with a half an hour zumba introduction with a proper zumba teacher.

Then they set to work cooking and following the recipe which was provided. Tuesdays recipe was chickpea and peach curry. A very balanced, cheap and healthy meal! (Other days they will be cooking lentil and vegetable pie, cheese scones and butternut squash soup)

Whilst the curry was cooking it was time for a nutrition lesson. All the participants were involved in a chat around the table with the community nutritionist who was running the session. On Tuesday we discussed food labels. We talked about what the information of the labels mean and how to read the traffic light system. We discussed important things to look for on labels including how much sugar, fat and salt are in things. The participants were given some example packaging and ask to count how many different names for sugar were in the one item – lots! It was then explain all the different names for sugar and the higher on the ingredients list the more there is in the food. We also discussed the guidelines for sugar for children, what free sugar means and which foods are included in this.

Other days they will learn about healthy snacks/drinks, food swaps and budgeting. Community nutrition sessions are so beneficial to the participants who attend and it gives the easy to follow information and advice for a healthier lifestyle for them and their family. I really loved getting involved. Talking to the participants was a great experience and I’d like to do more things like this!

At the end we then all sat down to eat the tasty curry. It was a simple recipe involving tinned tomatoes, onion, garlic, cumin, chilli and coriander. There was optional plain yoghurt to balance out the spice if needed! Some of the children were very skeptical about the meal but most of them ate it all up.

Exercise Physiology – Final year optional module for my nutrition degree

This term I am taking a module called coordinated physiological functions. It is actually based in the department of animal science so there is a variety of students on the module.

We will be looking at a variety of connected functions and behaviours and be focusing on the role of the hypothalamus and inter-connections with the nervous and endocrine systems. This is a key link between physiological function and behaviour.

‘The neural circuitry has a key role in providing central drive to the physiological changes underlying physical exercise. Increased activity has to be matched by alterations in cardiovascular and respiratory effort to meet the increase in metabolic demand.’ This is the description on our module handbook and introduces the area that we are currently looking at in our lab sessions.

In our labs we are comparing exercise economy according to predicted VO2max. We will look at the null hypothesis: fitness doesn’t predict exercise economy.

Exercise economy the energy cost of exercise at a particular work rate. Exercise economy can predict performance in aerobic events.

VO2max is oxygen consumption at maximal work rate. Fitness is characterised by VO2 max.

So basically we are going to see if fitness levels link to performance levels in the way we would expect. Using ourselves as subjects!

This is the equipment we will be using linked up to a computer.

We initially walked for a mile timed it and measured our heart rate after and then ran for a mile and timed it. We used these numbers and our weight and height to estimate our VO2max using an equation. We also predicted it using another equation based on non exercise data – using an exercise questionnaire and our BMI.

The next task is to predict our VO2max at sub-maximal work. So we will use the bikes to exercise to 75% of our VO2max and find the workload for each induvidual. Then we will use this to reate 4 workloads and then exercise for 3 minutes at each workload and record O2 consumption, heart rate and respiratory exchange ratio in order to predict VO2max.

Finally we will determine exercise economy by exercising for a short duration and measuring oxygen volume consumed. Subjects that consume less oxygen will be consumed by subjects that perform better.

Once we do all this we have to write up a group report of the findings.

Yoga

Every  September for the last few years I have gone to a few yoga sessions and then not continued. But this year I am doing well as i’ve been to lots already and am enjoying it! I’ve tried out a few different classes – some slower ones, some to music, some tough ones and some very stretching ones.

I am trying to increase my exercise this year and reduce stress as I start my final year of my undergraduate degree.

My housemate says yoga changed her life as she uses it to take time out from the busy life of being a medical student.

There are many potential benefits to Yoga.

I hope it makes me physically stronger and helps me to relax.

I will keep you updated on how i’m getting on and  if I learn to do a head stand I will let you know!

This was an outdoor yoga class I did in the first week back at uni with UoN Yoga Society.

Birthday cake…

I had a homemade chocolate birthday cake and it was lovely!

Celebrations with family friends meant for a mini tea party. We probably nearly all consumed more than our daily intake of sugar but it doesn’t happen every day so nobody should worry! Surrounding yourselves with lovely people and a couple of treats is good for your general well-being and certainly cheered me up. 

Everything in moderation! Enjoying food is very important if we are going to have a healthy relationship with food. Appreciating the piece of cake you really want and sitting and enjoying it is worth it. Grabbing something processed on the go that you barely notice you eat is less healthy. 

Definitely part of my balanced diet and healthy (ish) lifestyle. (I’m trying to increase my exercise)

​Camping food – Part three

Usually we keep milk or basics in a cool bag overnight with icepacks as there’s no fridge camping but this morning we didn’t have anything prepped so this meant prepping my oats and buying yoghurt on the way to go with it. Oats on the go!

Up the hill for a beautiful view of the estuary and good beach and hill walk to keep moving. 

Salad box from the bakery for lunch. Chose a selection including lentils + fennel + parmesan, Cornish new potatoes, green beans + mange tout in wholegrain mustard dressing, cucumber + poppy seeds + chilli pepper and roasted veg. (Can’t beat roasted veg) 

Proper campsite cooking for 9 involved bbq and risotto. Freshly prepared spring onion, mushroom and pea risotto. Sausages and burgers for whoever wanted them. And of course a side salad. 

Oats again. Fruit yoghurts from Spar and fruit. 

More eggy bread to feed everyone. Lots of boys! 

Fresh crab from Padstow harbour. I’m really enjoying lots more fish now than I used to. And it’s so good for you too. 

Yummy sorbet! I had passion fruit flavour. Sugary treat time.  It’s all about balance and no food being restricted so there’s always space for less healthy foods sometimes.

Fish and chips treat night on the beach. I bought spinach tomato and cucumber to go with my thai fishcakes which I ate the middle out of the batter. Yummmmmm. Plus everyhing taste better eaten on the beach. 

Another oaty yog breakfast. And a final lunch of homemade mackerel pate from the bakery, crackers and salad and fruit. Fishy meal again and 5 a day on the beach again. (Cucumber is one of my fave foods)

Hopefully it won’t be too long until the next camping trip and more tasty nutritious food in the outdoors. 

Camping food – Part 2

​Brought a whole box oats with me so I could still have my breakfasts. In my childhood winnie the pooh camping bowl I had oats and banana to start my day ready for the beach. Always a cup of tea too! 

Other breakfast options was of course the camping classic eggy bread! One of the easiest ways to make a filling breakfast on a single stove. 

Was a great day in the kayak crossing and exploring the estuary. Good exercise! 

Beach lunch of salad bits, turkey and oat crackers. Kayak paddle made a good plate. 

Always pack fruit too. 5 a day on the beach! 

Treat time fruit and nut cake from the bakery. Think that was a whole portion of nuts that day which is good. 

Long day of beach meant catching up with extended family and dinner out in a little cafe/bar/wine shop in polzeath… But that’s for another post!
